Respite Care

Respite care provides temporary relief for a primary caregiver, enabling you to take a much-needed break from the demands of caregiving a sick, aging, or disabled family member. 

Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD)

PDD ( Persons with Developmental Disabilities Program)  is an Alberta government funding program. Its target population is adult Albertans ( over 18 yrs)  with developmental disabilities. This program aims to assist them to be a part of their communities and live as independently as they can. 

PDD aims to fund individualized services for each individual. This program can also remain flexible as the person grows and their needs change. The decisions on what benefits will be funded, is made as a result of ongoing collaboration process between the department and the individual or his/her representative.

To be eligible for PDD, a person must be an adult (18 or older) and meet these three criteria:

Who can get PDD Funding?

  1. The individual must have a “significant limitation in intellectual capacity.” This means an IQ score of 70 or below.
  2. The individual must have a “significant limitation in adaptive skills.” This means the individual needs help with daily living activities like making food.
  3. The individual must have had both of these two limitations before he or she turned 18.

Family Managed Services

Family Managed Services (FMS) allows for an Individual, their family or a person close to the Individual to manage the delivery of services to the Individual by hiring staff directly or by obtaining supports through a Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) approved service provider.
While most Family Managed Services are arranged and directed by family members, this role may also be fulfilled by a non-related member of the Individual’s close personal network. This person who fulfils this role is known as the Family Managed Services (FMS) Administrator.

“Can I use an Agency that is not PDD-approved?”

Yes!  Here are two links from PDD about their interim Covid-19 policy that has not been rescinded, and can be used to support your claim to use an agency that is not PDD-approved.  You can use your funds to pay a non-approved agency, in order to set precedent and create a worthy case for exemption to policy.
